Stop H-Bomb Tests, Protest Poster

Stop H-Bomb Tests, Protest Poster

  • 1960
  • Ben Shahn (1898-1969)
  • 29 1/2 x 43 1/2 inches ~ (73 x 109 cm)
    $3,200
  • Linen backed

Linen backing is the industry standard of conservation. Canvas is stretchered and a sheet of acid free barrier paper is laid down. The poster is then pasted to the acid free paper using an acid free paste. This process is fully reversible and gives support to the poster. A border of linen is left around the poster and can be used by a framer to mount the poster so that nothing touches the poster itself.

The price of this poster includes linen backing.

  • NATIONAL COMMITTEE FOR A SANE NUCLEAR POLICY 17 E.45 ST. PREPARED BY GRAPHIC ARTISTS FOR SANE

Hand signed silk screen numbered 45/128

The poster is the full original printing sheet with an excess 4 inches at the bottom of the poster. There is a slight stain in a fold line where it was folded in a frame when the poster was acquired.

Shahn was a founding member of Graphic Artists for SANE (Committee for a SANE nuclear policy). He created this very limited edition serigraph "for a fund raising effort in a campaign advocating control of nuclear bomb tests." (Prescott p. 140) "The frightening devil mask suggests the evil consequences of hydrogen bomb tests. The red 'stop,' overprinted on the black mask, acts as a barrier between the viewer and the mask, visually suggesting that the evil can be averted." Prescott 171.
