This poster is currently unbacked. At check out, you will be given the opportunity to add backing which would cost $145 and take approximately 6-8 weeks.

Linen backing is the industry standard of conservation. Canvas is stretchered and a sheet of acid free barrier paper is laid down. The poster is then pasted to the acid free paper using an acid free paste. This process is fully reversible and gives support to the poster. A border of linen is left around the poster and can be used by a framer to mount the poster so that nothing touches the poster itself. Backing is what we recommend for framing, and for any poster needing restoration.

  • No. 1255 Jacob Lawrence (American, b. 1917). Dreams No. 2, 1965. Tempera on fiberboard, 35 3/4 x 24 in. National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian Institution, Gift of The Sara Roby Foundation 1986.6.95. Published by Pomegranate Publications, Box 6099, Rohnert Park, CA 94927. Designed by Patty Burke. Printed in Korea.

"Jacob Lawrence was inspired by the women in his Harlem neighborhood. Like his own mother, they worked hard to support their families and survived on very little money. In this painting a girl rests on a chair in front of two large windows. In one, a tall, elegant lady stands with a bouquet of flowers and in the other, a bride and groom dance and throw confetti. Windows and doorways were focal points of New York's brownstone neighborhoods, creating a link to life on the streets outside. But the bride and groom are clearly in a landscape beyond the city, and in this sense the windows have become screens onto which the young woman projects her fantasies." - Smithsonian American Art Museum
