An extremely rare Black Panther party sign with original newspaper articles taped to it. The article on the left side states, "Oakland police, deeply grieved and emotionally shattered by the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, killed one Black Panther and wounded three others in West Oakland Saturday night.
The wounded included Eldridge Cleaver, Black Panther Minister of Information, who was captured and whisked away to San Quentin. The dead man was Bobby Hutton, 18 years old, who had joined the Panthers two years ago.
Police said that the Panthers had laid an ambush for them at 28th and West Streets and then fled into a nearby house in which police said they discovered high-powered rifles and a submachinegun. The two officers wounded in the incident were hit by birdshot.
Hutton was killed as he walked out of the house after it had been shot up, tear-gassed and fire-bombed. Acording to Pantry Chairman Bobby Seale, Hutton had his hands...the air as he left the house. Police say that someone shouted 'He's got a gun!' just before they killed Hutton. No weapon was found on his person.
Monday it was announced that Oakland Mayor John Redding would be one of the pallbearers...Sunday Bobby Seale held a press conference".
The article on the right side states, "prove in court that the incident was part of a deliberate plot to wipe out the stop and middle leadership of the lack Panther Party. The police, he said, have sent dossiers out statewide on all Panther leaders, 'with instructions on how to deal with them.'
When asked what would happen in Oakland that night, Seale said 'I hope black people will go home. Spontaneity is not where it's at.'
Later that afternoon, he told a rally of 500 black people in Oakland's De Fremery Park that they must 'pinpoint racism' and 'organize to fish it,' rather than wasting energy in random acts of violence.
On Monday th ePeace and Freedom Movement drew five hundred people to a memorial meeting at San Fransisco's Civic Center, while in the East Bay over five thousand people marched from the Berkeley campus through white areas of Oakland to the Country Courthouse where Huey Newton is being held."
