  • MTA Arts for Transit commissions two to three artists each year to create transit-related artwork for poster production. These are randomly displayed in unused advertising space on platforms throughout the system's, 468 subway stations. The Program provides artists an opportunity to reach a broader public, while expressing the people, places, and purpose of the transit network. The program began in 1991 as a means of enhancing the station environment. Until 1998, the "Neighborhood" series highlighted neighborhood locations, encouraging the public to use the transit system and enjoy traveling to New York's diverse communities. In 1998, the theme was redirected to focus on transit-related subjects and has provided a fresh source of material for the creation of a collection New York-centered art.

The subway system brings people together by providing an easy way to move from place to place, letting us travel to all corners of the city to connect with friends, and sometimes, a special someone.

Artist Jonathan Bartlett imagines a love affair with the city set amidst the natural beauty of Central Park, only a subway ride away.
